How do fungal nails happen?

Fungal nail infections (or onychomycosis) are usually caused by damage to the nail plate or seal, allowing the fungus to invade the nail. Having feet stuck inside a pair of shoes for a whole day can cause warmth and dampness, which provides the perfect habitat for fungus to thrive. Other common causes of fungal nail infection include diabetes, biting of nails, foot trauma, smoking and immune suppression.

Prior to the adoption of laser technology for treatment, nail fungus was exceptionally difficult to remove, causing the sufferer to feel self-conscious and in some cases feel the need to hide their feet away. Using laser treatment we can now deliver excellent results, removing the infection in a short and simple procedure and delivering effective results.

How does treatment work?

We use a Nd:YAG Laser's ClearSteps onychomycosis treatment, which is performed in three simple steps:

Step 1 - File down the nail. During onychomycosis, the nail will become deformed & overgrown, and it may also thicken. Filing down the nail allows laser light to fully penetrate into the treatment site.

Step 2 - Administer Nd:YAG laser pulses in a circular pattern covering the entire nail. Slightly overlap the beam so that the nail is fully covered. The laser gently heats the infected nail evenly throughout its depth causing weakening and killing of the fungus. The patient will feel a slight heating sensation throughout the nail.

Step 3 - Target Nd:YAG laser pulses around the perimeter of the nail bed and around the finger or toe. Often parasitic fungus has worked its way beyond the nail bed and needs to be eliminated in the tissue surrounding the nail to prevent recurrence.
